Newborn Photos With Siblings
Welcoming a new baby is a big change for the whole family, especially for an older brother or sister. Including siblings in your newborn photos is a beautiful way to capture their growing connection and document this new chapter for your family.
During newborn sessions at my Zephyrhills, Florida studio, I always approach sibling photos with patience and flexibility. Whether your older child is excited, shy, energetic, or needs a little extra time, we work at their pace. The goal isn’t perfection—it’s to create natural, meaningful photographs while keeping your newborn safe and everyone comfortable.
Let Your Older Child Warm Up
Your older child may be excited about their new baby brother or sister, but that doesn’t always mean they’ll be ready to sit and smile for photos right away—and that’s okay.
I give siblings time to get comfortable with me, the studio, and the camera before expecting too much from them. We keep things relaxed, take breaks when needed, and work around their personality and age.
Some of my favorite sibling photographs happen in the simplest moments—a gentle touch, a kiss, a little laugh, or simply looking at their new baby.
Safety Always Comes First
When photographing a newborn with an older sibling, safety is always my first priority. Every pose is chosen based on the age and comfort level of both children.
For younger siblings, I may photograph them lying safely beside the baby or use angles and setups that allow them to interact without needing to hold the newborn. Older siblings who are comfortable holding the baby are carefully positioned and guided throughout the photograph.
A parent is always nearby when needed, and I never force a pose simply for the sake of getting a photograph. The goal is to create beautiful sibling portraits while making sure both your newborn and older child feel safe and comfortable.
What If My Toddler Doesn’t Cooperate?
This is one of the most common concerns parents have, especially when an older sibling is still a toddler. Please don’t worry if your child doesn’t want to sit still, smile, or interact with the baby exactly as we planned.
I never expect toddlers to behave perfectly for the camera. Instead, I give them time, keep things playful, and work with what they are comfortable doing. Sometimes we take a little break, try a different setup, or let them come back when they are ready.
Even a few seconds of connection can create a beautiful photograph. A quick kiss, holding the baby’s hand, or simply sitting nearby can become one of your favorite images from the session.
How to Prepare Your Older Child Before the Session
A little preparation before your newborn session can make a big difference, especially for younger siblings. Talk to your child about the session, positive and simple way. Let them know they’ll get to take some special pictures with their new baby brother or sister, but try not to put too much pressure on them to “be good” or smile.
Make sure they are well rested and have eaten before arriving whenever possible. Bringing a favorite snack or small comfort item can also be helpful.
Most importantly, keep expectations relaxed. Children often do best when they’re allowed to be themselves. I’ll guide them gently during the session and give them breaks whenever they need one.
What Should Siblings Wear for Newborn Photos?
When choosing what an older sibling should wear, I recommend keeping clothing simple and coordinating with the rest of the family rather than matching everyone exactly. Soft neutrals, creams, whites, beige, and other gentle tones photograph beautifully and help keep the attention on your family and your new baby.
Try to avoid large logos, busy patterns, or very bright colors that may distract from the connection in your photographs.
You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Before your newborn session, I’ll help you plan your family’s clothing and choose colors that work beautifully with the style of your session.
Your Newborn Session Is About the Whole Family
Your newborn session is not only about documenting how tiny your new baby is. It’s also about capturing the beginning of a new relationship between siblings and this new chapter for your entire family.
Whether your older child gives us a perfect cuddle, a quick kiss, or only a few seconds beside the baby, those little moments are worth remembering. My goal is to create a relaxed experience where we can document your family just as you are during this special season.
